The Grand Lodge of Louisiana issued a dispensation on April 10, 1905, for a Masonic lodge to form in Napoleonville, La., a small village in Assumption Parish about 15 miles north of Thibodaux along the banks of Bayou Lafourche, in the heart of Louisiana's sugarcane country. On Feb. 7, 1906, the Grand Lodge of Louisiana issued a charter for Assumption Lodge No. 307 in Napoleonville.

The first Worshipful Master was Emil Sundbery , a Swedish immigrant and lumber company executive who would serve the state as a state senator from 1912-16 and as as Master of the Louisiana Grand Lodge in 1913. Click here for a full list of the lodge's Worshipful Masters.

The lodge moved to Lafourche Parish and its current site in Thibodaux, on the corner of Lynn St and Plantation Road, in 1954. The name was changed in 1979 to Walter I. Lanier Lodge No. 307 to honor the late Walter Irving Lanier, P.M., who served as the lodge's secretary for more than 30 years prior to his death in 1979.
